Snake's Head Fritillary - Fritillaria meleagris
A native meadow bulb, known for the chequerboard markings on its bell-shaped flowers. Each stem carries a single bloom in plum-purple or white, hanging downwards. It performs best in damp ground and longer grass, where it spreads on its own and builds up into a colony over several years.
Plant in drifts of 25 or more in damp grass or a moist border, where they will naturalise over time. They grow in pots, but look far more natural in the ground.
Toxic to cats and dogs if eaten.
